(a) BS 8002 method

In accordance with the methods set out in BS 8002, we apply a surcharge of 10kN/m2, and allow for a future unplanned excavation of 10 per cent of the clear height (= 0.5 m) in front of the wall (Fig. 7.9a). The pressure distribution is then as shown in Fig. 7.9b.
