An alternative method that removes the numerical work is to utilise the influence charts devised by Newmark in 1942 (Fig. 4.8).

It can be shown that, at a point at a depth z vertically below the edge of a uniformly loaded circular foundation of radius r, the vertical stress is given by the expression:
