Geotechnical reports

'The report of my death was an exaggeration' - Mark Twain (1835-1910)1 16.1 Introduction

Eurocode 7 introduces a plethora of three-letter abbreviations into the geotechnical lexicon, including the limit states STR, GEO, EQU, HYD, and UPL discussed in Chapters 6 and 7. This chapter introduces two more TLAs (three-letter acronyms): 'GIR' for the Ground Investigation Report and 'GDR' for the Geotechnical Design Report.

The Ground Investigation Report is discussed in detail in Section 16.3 and the Geotechnical Design Report in Section 16.4. The reports upon which the GIR depends are discussed in Section 16.2. Finally, Section 16.5 compares the new set of reports defined by Eurocode 7 with those currently specified in existing practice. The relationship between all these reports is illustrated in Figure 16.1.
