This is a change to traditional UK practice, which employed the terms 'very soft' to 'hard' to describe both the consistency and strength of cohesive soils (very soft cu < 20kPa; soft 20-40kPa; firm 40-75kPa; stiff 75-150kPa; very stiff 150-300kPa; and hard > 300kPa). The category 'extremely low' is new to UK practice, subdividing the previous 'very soft' category into two: extremely and very low.

When both the consistency and strength are measured, the soil might be described as, for example, a 'stiff fissured high strength CLAY'. The soil's consistency would be based on the field log and its strength on the results of subsequent laboratory tests.
