Although the table is useful in identifying where it is likely that a particular in situ test will be useful, there are some situations where the categorization could be questioned. For example, the table indicates that standard penetration tests (SPTs) have low applicability for assessing undrained shear strength cu in fine soils, but experience suggests that established correlations between cu and SPT blow count are as reliable - if not more reliable - than laboratory tests for determining cu.
