Structural analysis and design by testing

Calculations must be performed using appropriate structural models with relevant variables. The models must be based on established engineering theory and practice and, if necessary, verified experimentally.

Design by testing may be used in place of structural analysis, provided it achieves the level of reliability required for the relevant design situation. When a limited number of test results are available, the design must take account of their statistical uncertainty. [en 1990 ยง5.1.1(2)P]
