Summary of key points

'Reaching agreement between the EU Member States on [a] unified geotechnical methodology ... led to the introduction of concepts and terminology that may not be familiar to many designers of foundations and other geotechnical structures.'12

Reading it for the first time, many engineers find Eurocode 7 Part 1 difficult to understand.13 Contributing to this is an abundance of 'Eurospeak' (i.e. English written in a way that makes it easier for non-English-speaking Europeans to understand).14 However, Eurocode 7 is worthy of prolonged study. It brings together many excellent principles in a comprehensive and rational manner, consistent with structural design, while still acknowledging the difficulties and peculiarities of geotechnical engineering.
