Biological Growth Factors

Major factors affecting biological growth are temperature, nutrient availability, oxygen supply, pH, degree of sunlight, and the presence of toxins. Bacteria are classified by their optimum temperature range for growth. For example, mesophilic bacteria grow best in an optimum temperature range for growth. For example, mesophilic bacteria grow best in a temperature range of 10 - 40° C (optimum at 37° C In general, the rate of biological activity almost doubles for every 10-15° C rise in temperature within the range of 5 - 35° C. Beyond 40° C, mesophilic activity drops dramatically and thermophilic growth is initiated (thermophilic bacteria have a range between 45 - 750 C, with an optimum of about 55° C). Thermophilic bacteria are typically more sensitive to temperature variations.
